Back to school!

Our one on one teaching project at ACJ Primary began again this week after the Christmas break. It was great to be back and see everyone and especially exciting to implement the next stages of our programme development. As a result of the volunteers hard work last term the school have seen the value of giving us our own permanent place to work so the first thing to do was set it up and make it a comfortable and inviting place to be. After lots of drawing and colouring and a trip to the local mall it was time to meet the kids and get the programme underway for 2010! We have developed some new parts to our programme which include structured learning to read workshops and then in the afternoon open workshops where children can come for help with homework or class work they are struggling with or more reading practice. We weren’t sure how these would go down as we are aware children in these communities have other responsibilities which may prevent them from taking part in extra curricular activities so you can imagine how pleased we were when lots of children turned up and were really enthusiastic to work with the volunteers. With the start of the year we also welcomed our new school coordinator Rachel to the team who celebrated her birthday on Tuesday.

It was a good start to the year and we hope to maintain the momentum and make 2010 an even more successful year at ACJ Primary than 2009! We look forward to meeting all those who are already coming out to join us this year and invite anyone else to come out and help us achieve our goals and make a big difference to the children and their communities, we could not do any of this without you.
