A budding little bookworm!
What a week it has been getting to know everyone here in Paarl and at Hope Centre. Stepping into that classroom on your first day as a GVI volunteer, you really don’t know what to expect but soon enough you just fall in love with the kids, even the naughty ones!
One boy in the Lions class, Damian, was so pleased to have books read to him in activity time. He would simply look up at me expectantly after each one was finished and wait until the next was pulled out from the pile. He repeated everything I said to him and was particularly interested in what all the weird Australian animals were in the pictures! I mean every kid knows what a cow is but a koala- woah! The most basic things for me are so exciting for them. You really feel that they love to learn. Just that one moment when I finished the first book and was about to move on to another table is when Damian pushed a different one towards me. This was enough to reassure you that you are needed. They constantly seek your praise. A perfect example of this was in yesterday’s creative session. Alex and I organised the lesson around making fruit salad, which was so much fun. All throughout the class the kids called, “teacher look”! They were just so eager for us to notice that all the fruit was cut up with their little plastic knives in the right way. At the end the class was strewn with mashed up buts of apple and grapes, but the kids and us left with a smile on our faces! What an awesome four days it has been…can’t wait to see what the next week brings.
