Hamba Kakuhle Buthi

Unfortunately this week GVI Cape Town said goodbye to one of our valued staff members, Alex Gillbert, after 6 months with GVI Alex is moving back to his Canadian homelands. Alex began with GVI as a long term teaching intern, after his first 3 months Alex soon progressed to become our Sports Co-ordinator at ACJ Pakade Primary School.

In true ACJ style a last minute goodbye party was thrown together by the senior management team and me to celebrate our time working with Alex and thank him for everything he has done for the project and the school over the duration of his stay.

The children were asked to make a contribution towards a goodbye gift from the school to Alex and a local DJ was brought in to really get the party started. The children and teachers gathered, music blared from the speakers all GVI volunteers from the various Cape Town projects were invited in as special guests, speeches were given and even the school choir gave us a beautiful rendition of some traditional hymns. A dance group performed original routines and at various stages throughout the programme children, teachers and even Alex himself gave the crowd an impromptu dance show.

The whole afternoon was a wonderful way to say thank you and goodbye to our colleague and friend. The gifts bought by the school were beautiful and Alex was very moved by the whole experience, as were we all.
Go well brother
