Story Time a Favourite Time at Ikhayalethemba

Jacqueline Kennedy once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all.

This love of books is something we are focusing on developing with the children at Ikhayalethemba. Each day we read stories and give the children time to look at books and practise their reading.  It’s amazing how in such a short time they’ve developed the ability to sit and read together for half an hour, a pretty good effort for some of our three and four year olds. It’s also great to see how caring the children are being with the books and taking time to share their books with the toddlers and babies. “Hairy MacLeary from Donaldson’s Dairy” is currently the favourite story, luckily there’s a whole series that we can read!

Reading is so important for our children.  It opens their eyes to the world and helps them understand themselves and their own world.  For our children in particular, it exposes them to the English language, what better way to learn English than through a good story! Research has shown that reading to children helps them to become better readers themselves and most importantly exposes them to a broad vocabulary which is essential to their development as literate adults.

We can’t underestimate the importance of reading to children and so when we have volunteers reading to our children each and every day, we know that we are helping to develop a love of reading.
