Story time at Ikhayalethemba

Story time at Ikhayalethemba continues to be a popular part of the day.  Each morning the children start the day with “Circle time”. This is a time when we sit in a circle with the volunteers and children and sing our morning “Hello song”.  We follow this with a variety of other action songs aimed at developing the children’s English skills. It’s great to see our toddlers being so involved as they learn more and more words. We then bring out the book bag and the children choose books that they can either look at independently or read with one of the volunteers.  What we have been really pleased with, is the care the children show for the books and also the way they really get to know the stories that they enjoy.  Even the toddlers know exactly which books to choose to find their favourite animal pictures and stories.  The children listen intently when they are being read to and if they are looking at a book on their own, they will often tell a familiar story in their own words.  These are both such important steps in the development of the children’s English language skills. This is where a true love of books can begin.
