The Next BIG Challenge...?
So the time has come for GVI Cape Town to once again embark on another new challenge. The difference on this occasion... we’ve gone BIG!
Welcome to the beginnings of the GVI Cape Town Big 5 Charity Challenge!!
Between the 12th and 16th November we will be covering 350km, in just 5 days, without any motorized transport! From the tip of the African Continent, round the stunning coast of the Western Cape and finishing on top of the infamous Table Mountain in Cape Town. For what cause? You may well ask. For a new container classroom at The Hope Centre on the Fish Hoek side of our operations, and the set-up of a new Grade R (kindergarten) at Ikhayalethemba Village on the Gordon’s Bay side. Yes, it’s a big step up from the Half Marathons we have recently run. This time we thought we would really push the boat out – quite literally if we manage to incorporate a little sailing into the event. We’ll have to see. The majority of the distance we expect to be cycling, running, or hiking, perhaps with a little kayaking thrown in for good measure.
The preparations are now fully underway. Not least of which being the training required to survive this arduous test of endurance. Nick Herrick (our Fish Hoek Senior Coordinator) and I are down to complete the whole 5 days and just last week we started our training. With only 6 weeks to go it will need to be an intensive one, but we are raring to get stuck in. My running shoes have barely seen the light of day since April so a thorough dusting off was required. However, they are now once more starting to feel the pressure of the pounding on the pavement.
