Grade R...One Year On

This time last year, Lucy and were lucky enough to be the first volunteers to work at our Grade R site in Nomzamo. We were there doing a Community Development Internship. Since then we’ve had volunteers there consistently and it’s been great to see the developments that have taken place. Each volunteer has added something to the programme. Along the way, Grace, the Grade R teacher has learnt a few tips from us and we have certainly learnt a lot from her. It’s developed into a very successful partnership.

Physically we’ve seen the painting of a mural, the establishment of plant boxes, a jungle gym built, sand play areas established and teaching resources being added to.  It’s a great learning environment for the children.
Our programme supports small groups of children who not only need extra support with their learning but we also work with more capable children to extend their learning.  Of course our presence at Grade R gives the children a chance to practise their conversational English too.  Parents of the children have commented on the improvement they have seen in their children’s English.
We thank all the GVI staff and volunteers who have supported Grade R in the past year and of course Grace who does an amazing job with the children. We are sure our partnership has truly benefited the children of Nomzamo.
