Position Vacant
Lea is the pin up girl for Ikhayalethemba’s amazing special needs children. Anyone who has spent time with Lea will know and love her joyful and vocal ways. Today, two volunteers, Clare and Emma created something wonderful for Lea.
They had the goal to teach Lea how to wash clothes. She has previously indicated she had a passion for water and spends great periods of time with the carers watching and learning their art so they thought washing would be a great start. When the bucket of water, soap and rags were delivered to her, Lea needed no instruction at all! She got down on her knees and promptly started to clean, not just dipping in and out of the water, but using the soap bar to scrub furiously at the rags ensuring not an inch of dirt remained!
When she was done, without much persuasion Lea took the rags in a milk crate across the yard and started to hang them on the line.It was not long before she was collecting the fallen dry clothes to return them to house 2 for folding. This moment was easily the highlight of my time in Gordon’s Bay so far! Without the support and help from the volunteers, these children just wouldn’t have such amazing opportunities.
I feel like the day when we help to write Lea’s C.V and submit it to Mama for a carers position at The Sanctuary is not as far away as we might think!
