A Rich Experience
I have wanted to visit Africa for a really long time and this trip was something I looked forward to more than anything in my life thus far. I have been in Gordon’s Bay for three weeks, and though things are much different than I had expected them to be, I couldn’t imagine a richer experience.
I spent my first two weeks at the Nceduluntu nursery where about 50 kids attend each day. There is not a lot of space to teach and disruptions are something that must be dealt with regularly; but the kids want to learn and they do put effort into their lessons regardless of everything else going on around them. The kids tested us to see if we really cared, and when they realized that we were there precisely because we do, they showed their appreciation with their constant desire to be around us; which is an irreplaceable admiration. Each day was different and unique, so I made a point to absorb everything I could in the ten short days I was there. I could have never conceived that I would grow so fond of so many children so quickly.
The last three weeks would not have been as enjoyable or interesting without my fellow volunteers and coordinators. I arrived with eleven other volunteers to add to the eleven others who were already here. It amazes me how easily we became comfortable and close with one another. Together we have been able to delve into and appreciate the South African culture. I have learned so much from each person I have encountered and am excited for the knowledge I will gain in this last week. I feel so lucky to have been able to encounter all of these unique individuals on and off project; I know that I am going to miss it all so much.
