Smiles That Will Melt Your Heart

What a whirlwind two weeks! As my second GVI program I once again had my heart stolen this time by the children of Ikhayalethemba orphanage in the township of Nomzamo. My favourite part of this project was seeing how all these children are able to live with family thanks to Mama Lumka’s generosity and love.

Whilst their living conditions are basic compared to the likes of developed countries, these children are some of the most energetic, enthusiastic and charmingly happy children you could wish to meet. Their mischievous smiles instantly melt your heart and make you never want to leave.

Days at the orphanage are a mix between organised chaos, focused one-to-one lessons, colourful creative sessions and a very loud and boisterous outdoor play!  It’s always guaranteed to be busy and full-on but the children have an infectious laughter so it’s always enjoyable.

Classes at the orphanage are great because you really get to see the children’s development. The kid’s personalities are all so different but despite that they all get along so well.

One of my favourite things to see was the kids singing grace in their native language of Xhosa. It’s so magical seeing them, hands together in prayer singing in unison. As well as this they also frequently break out into song and dance together. Their native dances are so rhythmic and musical and it’s great to see them so excited to share these with the GVI volunteers. These two weeks are amongst the best of my life and the kid’s positivity is something I will always admire and respect.
