Timhla & Namhla

We started working in the Ikhayalethemba Village with GVI four weeks ago. It has been such a wonderful experience. We were placed with Class C – teaching twin girls Timhla and Namhla aged 6 years. They are two very happy, friendly girls. During our time we have helped implement a literacy and numeracy program for the girls to follow which will help prepare them for their entrance exam for Grade R in primary school.

The girls have taken to the program really well, each week focusing on a particular letter formation, letter sound and we follow a handwriting program. We have been teaching them through story and rhyme. During numeracy time the girls are counting and matching numbers to objects and learning to form numbers through concrete materials and games.

We have seen a magnificent change in the girls’ confidence and ability in just four weeks. Each Friday the girls are examined in the work carried out over the week by the coordinator Beth and their hard work is rewarded through a star chart.  Once their girls reach eight stars their reward is to help choose an activity for “Fun Friday”.

We are both privileged and delighted to have been part of this program and to know we have helped change the lives of two super girls, Timhla and Namhla, in just a small way. Thank you GVI for this opportunity.
