Morning: Teaching, Afternoon: Baking…. all in a day’s work!

Interns Federica and Cat.

After arriving on Sunday and being given a full tour of our accommodation and local area we were straight into our training on Monday. Having basic Xhosa lesson was great fun and some found it easier than others but at least we now know how to great each other ‘Molo, unjani’. Now that we were fully equipped with our language we went for a tour of the township. It was great to see all the sites we would be working in and it gave us a real sense of where we will be and seeing the children before we started meant the first day wasn’t quite so scary! The first day was definitely intense but great fun and the children responded well to us, it really reminded us of why we were here. We also spent our first afternoon having a bread baking lesson at Ikhayalethemba, this was a real treat to have on our first day and really helped us get stuck into the bakery which is going to be a big project for us while we are here.
Baker Simon and intern Jeremy.
The bakery is a really challenging and exciting opportunity for all of us and something that is going to make such a difference to the local community. We all feel privilege to have such a big part in the launch of this new project and help Ikhayalethemba work towards becoming a sustainable project and financially independent. Watch this space to find out updates on how the launch goes and continues to develop over the coming months, fingers crossed this will be a huge success for all involved especially the Nceduluntu Trust and the beautiful children they support!
