GVI Cape Town Surfing Special - ‘Everybody loves surfing, surfing RSA’

Vols and staff ready for action!
As the Cape Town projects continue to grow and develop thanks to all the hard working volunteers and staff we are always looking for new and exciting ways to help and empower the children and local communities. Our latest development is to start GVI’s very first surfing program! This is quite different to all our other programs as it is an incentive scheme to encourage and motivate children to learn and work hard at school. Each term the Grade 6 teachers at ACJ will select a group of students who have been trying hard with their studies and enter them in the surfing team with the premise that they must keep up their hard work at school to maintain their place in the team throughout the year.
GVI's very first surf team!

GVI volunteers then take these children to the beach after school 3 days a week and teach them to surf (while learning themselves in most cases!) They also have a beach session where they learn about the beach and the ocean, awareness of their environment and how they should respect it as well as lots of fun creative activities and games!

We are sure this is going to be a welcome distraction from a lot of these children’s very difficult home lives as well as having a significant impact on their studies and education in general, and you never know we may just find the next Jordy Smith! Be sure to check in soon to see how its going and some hilarious photos of children, volunteers and staff doing funny things in wetsuits :-)
