Circles and lines...

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, 26 figures that don’t make sense to a five year old. For them it’s just circles and lines that are brought together without a clear reason. Circles and lines that they can forget, put upside down or twist around. Circles and lines that they have to remember, not only to pass the Grade R exam at the end of the year to be able to start first grade, it is circles and lines that they have to know by heart to be able to take part in the world and all the messages that are given to us from all different media.
They don’t know what these figures can do. How they can make words, become sentences and deliver an important message, a message that may change someone’s life one day. So our job as teachers is to deliver a message regarding the importance of these letters. We can help them to remember what order to put these circles and lines, to create what we call letters, so that they can help to make sense of them and to make a little bit more sense of the world.
