Honey, breakfast is ready!
Ouch! That was the word that came out of one girl’s mouth while we were playing with a tea set during an
afternoon at the nursery in Nomzamo. The four year old girl was pretending that
she was toasting a slice of bread in the toaster. She shook her fingers as if
the plastic toast had burnt her, it was amazing to see how engaged the
children were in the play.
It is not often the children at the nursery
are given the opportunity to play with toys, something you could see even if
you didn’t know the children.
When they first were given the cars and
plastic tea-set in the beginning of the session they just held the toys tight
to their chests, they didn’t even want to play with them because they were too
scared of losing them. But throughout the session the children’s grips got
looser and looser around the borrowed toys as they started to appreciate them and be
creative with the plastic pieces. And in not much time at all, the whole group
of children were playing breakfast at three o' clock in the afternoon in our
classroom container, a lovely sight to see and they definitely enjoyed themselves!
